Our 5th annual youth group speedball tournament was recently held at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie.
12 teams were entered from churches around the Wellington region with over 150 competitors in total.
In a change of format to previous years, this year’s tournament consisted of just a single division, with each team facing off against every other team at some point during the night. This format provided us with some awesome match ups and some big surprises when teams who were new to speedball this year took out a victory against some of the mainstay regular teams.
In the closing stages of the night we found ourselves running the closest tournament in the 5 years with 6 teams in the running for the title with just a couple of rounds left to go.
Eventually, Heretaunga Christian Centre’s A team took out the title, becoming the first team ever to defend the trophy.
Bella from Northern Hills Church was our MVP of the night and special credit should go to the whole team from Northern Hills for competing at such a high level in their first ever tournament.

Next year we will look to host the tournament back in its regular August time slot.
