Our Oho Ake programmes which support vulnerable young people have in the past few years been focussed on supporting predominately young males. This year under the leadership of Allie Miles, Ignite Sport has been able to develop our first Oho Ake programme for young women at Naenae College. This group of Year 11 students have already covered important topics such as the importance of knowing who they are and of having a good support crew in their lives. The kaupapa of Whanau (Family), Pumanawa (positive atmosphere) and Unity is the underlining values for the year.
So far this year these young women have pushed themselves out of their comfort zone on the high ropes at Adrenalin Forest and experienced a full on fitness and boxing session at the Wellington Boxing Gym. There was a lot of laughter and some very tired bodies that returned back to the College.
The team is excited to continue to journey with these young women this year and look forward to seeing the impact Oho Ake can have on their lives.
