We started the day picking up eleven eager & excited Year 11 students from Naenae College ready for another day with us. Their excitement then became apprehensive as we told them we would be tackling the Te Whiti Firebreak. They may have been nervous and unsure but they were all up for giving it a go.
We walked up the first 10mins together until we got to the first steep part. Each steep part we would do a team challenge. We continued to do different team challenges all the way up the firebreak making it interesting and fun. The challenges kept their minds focused on helping each other and soon without realising it they were at the top. There were lots of comments like “What! We are here already”.
There was a real sense of satisfaction when they reached the top. Being able to see a beautiful view of the Hutt Valley and see where we had started from the students couldn’t believe they were already there. Once we were all back in the bus, everyone was feeling good about what they had achieved and the group really bonded.
The day showed our young people the importance of team and what you can achieve when you work together. It helped them to see when they put in the hard work together that they could conquer obstacles and get a great reward looking out over the incredible view.
These Sports Ambassadors are the future leaders of Naenae College. We are excited about their potential and believe they will achieve great things. This day was another step in helping them to be the best leaders they can be.
