August the 12th saw us back at the ASB Sports Centre for our 4th annual Youth Group Speedball Tournament.
This year’s event consisted of 16 teams from 12 different churches, with around 180 participants. This made it the world’s biggest ever Speedball tournament.
It was great to see so many regular teams back again as well as having teams from Hope Centre, Beachside Church and Oasis Church enter for the very first time.
The evening started with a team briefing followed by an awesome message from Paris Winiata from Movement youth group.
We then got started with some practice time on the courts before round one got underway at 6.30pm. 3 hours, 9 rounds and 56 matches later, Heretaunga Christian Centre became the first church to take out both the Division A and Division B titles.
Logan Siaosi from Movement Youth was our MVP of the tournament.
Thanks so much to everyone that took part and our awesome refs and volunteers – special mention must go to Josh Cody for winning the ‘Most Flamboyant Ref’ award with his signature Sliding Penguin goal celebration move.
A massive thank you also to Paul Ballantyne of www.moanaroad.com (external link) and Strike Bowling for generously sponsoring us with some awesome prizes.
Looking forward already to seeing you all back for the 2018 tournament.
We are also keen to run a young adults version of this sometime soon this year. If your church or young adults group would be keen to enter a team, please email Alex - alex@ignitesport.org.nz
